Sri Lanka began implementing what educators have called the most comprehensive school transformation in several decades, with a newly designed curriculum for Grade 1 and Grade 6 students rolling out to all schools from January 2026. The reform is the first phase of a broader overhaul that will progressively extend to remaining grades over the coming years.

The new curriculum shifts away from rote memorisation and exam pressure toward competency-based learning emphasising critical thinking and practical skills. Class periods have been restructured from 40 to 50 minutes, with the daily schedule reduced from eight periods to seven to allow deeper subject engagement. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who also holds the Education portfolio, described the reform as essential for preparing students for a knowledge economy. Teacher orientation training, underway since mid-2025, continues alongside the rollout. School hours remain at 7:30 am to 1:30 pm, with a proposed extension suspended due to post-cyclone transport disruptions in late 2025.
