While acknowledging a more "positive stance" from the current administration, the Cardinal expressed frustration over systemic delays in the Attorney General’s Department. "We are closer to the truth, but obstacles still exist," the Cardinal stated, questioning why critical data from state intelligence remains missing or deleted.
A Possible Transition at the Helm
The Cardinal’s strong remarks come amid mounting reports that a leadership transition in the Archdiocese of Colombo is imminent. Senior Church sources indicate that Cardinal Ranjith, who will turn 79 later this year, has expressed a personal willingness to step down.
Under Vatican norms, bishops typically submit their resignation at age 75. While Pope Leo XIV has extended the Cardinal's tenure multiple times, observers suggest the Vatican is now actively vetting four potential successors to lead the Sri Lankan Catholic Church into a new era.
Legacy of a "Little Ratzinger"
Known globally as a staunch traditionalist—often referred to by Vatican observers as "the little Ratzinger"—Cardinal Ranjith has remained a polarizing but undeniably influential figure. Beyond his local activism, he continues to be cited by international Church analysts as a significant voice for the "Global South" and remains an eligible elector in any upcoming papal conclaves until he reaches age 80 in late 2027.
